Digital Art

Digital Art is just like traditional art, except that it’s created with different tools. Some artists use traditional tools like paints and brushes for their art, whereas digital art involves using modern tools and technology to create art.

Therefore, Digital Art is defined as the art made or presented using digital technology. And a digital artist is someone who uses digital technology and computer as the medium to create and express art.

Some popular digital artists are Joey Chou, Tasia M.S, Irina French, David Villegas, and more.

History of Digital Art

digital art todayAs modern as it sounds, digital art can be traced back to the 1980s. During this period, Harold Cohen and some computer engineers created a paint computer program, AARON, to produce art.

In the 1990s, the internet became widespread, digital technology improved, and digital art became more accessible to a wider audience.

Also, the improvement of technology during this period made it possible to download videos on computers allowing the artists to manipulate images filmed with video cameras.

2000 saw an increase in internet use, and digital art got more attention as artists had advanced mediums and tools to expand their creativity.

However, in the last decade, digital art has even evolved and even better. Several graphics software and hardware like Adobe make digital art more advanced, fascinating, and exciting.

Categories of Digital Art

There are three main categories of digital art. They include;

  • Digital Photography or Darkroom

This involves the use of digital technology to manipulate or distort real images. Captured images are stored as a computer file where they are then edited through a digital process.

  • Digital Painting

Digital painting involves creating art with the use of digital painting tools. Digital painting emulates traditional techniques like oils and watercolors, but its application involves using a computer and software.

  • Fractals

These arts are produced by mathematical manipulation. Mathematical formulas are modified to create a unique graphical composition.

Advantages of Digital Art

  • It saves time and money
  • It is an excellent solution for beginners learning how to draw or paint
  • It is easily accessible and convenient
  • It is easier to share

Digital Vs. Traditional Art: Which Is Better?

It depends on what’s readily available to you. What’s the difference between digital and traditional art? Traditional art employs conventional tools that have been refined and improved over time. In contrast, digital art utilizes digital technologies to create art.

Also, digital art requires no less skill than traditional art. The same creative process that goes into a traditional art is the same as digital art. The only difference is the tools involved, and art isn’t about the tools used but the message and creativity.

If you have a tablet PC and software for designing digital art, use that. If not, your art supplies will suffice.
